In Reply to: WHOA!! THIS IS DANGEROUS!! CAPS TOO LOW A VOLTAGE RATING!! posted by Todd Krieger on August 07, 2001 at 15:46:10:
I agree with Todd, but not for the same reason.Capacitors are quite often rated in AC volts. But a 250 AC volt cap on a 240 AC volt line is really cutting it close. A high line situation or a surge could easily exceed the cap's voltage rating.

Hey. I said one for each leg to ground. These are the same caps Jon R. recommends and only see 120V. It sounds good. Try it, but please turn off the power first. It's safer.
The phase is NOT distributed over the two legs.If you have 240V service, ONE leg carries the phase and has appr. 240VAC wrt to the the null or return leg.
The return leg can float a bit wrt. ground, so the actual voltages wrt. ground can be a bit higher even.
When I saw the original post, you stated "240". Triodethom's suggestion is a good one, provided the caps have a UL rating. In fact, if you simply want a filtering cap there (don't ever want it to act like an MOV), no voltage rating is too high. If a 2000V or higher rating is available, go for it.A cap and a metal-oxide varistor (MOV) kind of function the same way, in regard to lightning strikes. Except the clamping voltage in a cap is usually higher, and its failure mode is usually unknown, where an MOV is made to fail in a safe (fire-retardant, no toxic fumes) manner. OTOH, MOV's do have the adverse sonic effect of blunting initial transients, due to its capacitive effects- probably worse than a capacitor since the MOV's materials are not necessarily optimized for audio.
Maybe we need "audio-grade MOV's."
600volt ac rating is what is call for by most govering bodies in the USA per leg of the single phase 240 . So 250v ac rated cap will go the first time lighting hit the power line any where with in oh say about a mile of your house. Be safe and increase the voltage value to 600 .
