Hi,I'm building AKSA amplifier, wondering whether change of stock resistors will have significant improvement? Do this worth in turn of cost/preformance?
Thanks.
Follow Ups:
Does anybody know if the old AKSA amp (available from ESP as a board)
sounds as good as the new AKSA kit (only available from
printedelectronics) The AKSA site states that the old board is not as
sonically refined as the new one?I don't want to short change Hugh Dean - the AKSA designer but I have a number of parts already at hand and I wish to substitute parts as per discusssions on this list. BTW are these caps, resistors substitutions for the old boards?
John
I replaced AKSA stock resistors with Kiwames (2W). There is no significant improvement.
But C8 cap (0,1uF) will make significant improvement.
You can use very expensive Jensen copper foil PIO (do not use aluminium) 0.1uF/630V or much chiper AXON (around USD$ 3). Some of my friends preferred Axons!Go to:
http://www.tubes.it
http://aziende.topnet.it/vintagehifi
Or contact Bruno at:
brunoceccarelli@worldonline.it
Or
bru.ce@tiscalinet.itI paid for Jensen 0.1uf/630V 40.000 ITL ea.
and 2.100 ITL ea. for Kiwames.Good luck
Some resistors on the AKSA respond better to changes than others, most notable are the 2 that go to the bases of the output transistors.
Carbon Composite work very well, reportedly wirewound resistors with some inductance do to (welwyn). If you use carbon, use the Riken Ohm, they are as good as the AB without the noise or drift.I agree with the copper PIO, and use them between the driver bases also. IMHO dont worry about the Al. PIO, they are not nearly as good IMHO.
Jensen relabled Angela PIO copper foil avail. for USD 19 from Angela Instruments in the US. they can match them too. They also sell the Riken resistors.
Good cap for C1 and also charge suckout helps. Black gate for C2 and C3 is night and day improvement, try the non polar types. leave C4 stanrdard, or replace with the worst type you can find, poor HF performance is an advantage here.

shane
Hi,I can't found 0.1uF/630V copper foil Jensen PIO in Hong Kong. But aluminium is available. Do you have expereince with it, in fact aluminum just half price of copper one.
Thanks.
Forget aluminium and use Jensen copper (silver clad) PIO caps.
I agree with Shane that Black Gate for C2(10uF) and C3(100uF) make noticable improvement.
Hi Emir, have you read about the black gate non polar L-cancelling pair, or super E-cap?. I have been thinking about 2x 4.7 in parallel for C2 and 2x 47uF for C3, any thoughts as to whether it'd be cost effective?.. pretty expensive suck it and see situation.
BTW Jensen Cu PIO solid silver leadout.regards,
shane
