Hi, how long have you had these amps? If you want an example of what I think is long term reliability, it's Crown. I've been using, almost daily, a Crown IC150 preamp, since 1974. The D150 power amp is still working just fine, although it hasn't been used much since 1997. The DC300 that I'm using in my second system, is of the same era. I bought it used in '94 and have used it daily since then. What I am saying, is that it is bit premature to be claiming long term reliability.

Jeff,First of all, I agree entirely with your assertion that Crown makes rugged and reliable gear. The primary focus of their engineering is high availability in the professional arena. I owned a D-150 back in high school and inadvertently abused it by shorting out it's outputs with a screwdriver. That event loosely welded the screwdriver to the posts. After dislodging the screwdriver and correcting the wiring, I switched it back on and it worked perfectly. I would venture to say that it would likely be working today 27 years later had I not replaced it long ago.
On the other hand, I wish to venture where jj eloquently elected to not. Further, I want these comments to be taken in the intended light of genuine concern and "tough love". I am not at all trying to be snotty or elitist, so here goes:
The IC-150 is a notoriously bad sounding component. It is simply horrible!. The dealer who sold me the D-150 (which WAS a good amp a quarter century ago), called it the ICCCHHH preamp. He hated it. Sold me a Harman Kardon Citation 11 instead. It possesses zero depth and the high frequency character is that of fingernails clawing across a chalkboard. It was lousy in 1974 and even worse today. If you enjoy listening to music, I implore you to listen to another preamp - any!

rw, did you take a look at my systems? The Crown is in a bedroom system and for listening to the tuner , mostly while sleeping, it is ok. If you are really concerned for my welfare, please send me a replacement preamp, preferably something with tubes. The system in the bedroom with the old Yamaha "natural sound" tuner is not unpleasant to listen to and being on a budget, I put every cent I have into more music and my main system. So let me know when you are ready to ship the preamp and I'll send you my address. Hey, thanks for your concern.
Jeff
I was in a similar situation with my office system. I mainly use it for listening to the tuner as do you, using the CD every once in a while. I sold the Dyna PAS-3x I was using and purchased a used Pioneer tuner with a gain control. Now I go straight into the Threshold power amp. On the less frequent case of listening to the CD, I simply move the ICs to the CD player. Which by the way is a portable Sony using its own gain control. Works fine for me.So, if you are not using the phono section and mainly listen to Jazz on the tuner, then you might benefit from selling the IC-150.

Hi, thought about it, but I do play CDs and the CD player has no variable outs. The amp is not real accessable from the bed. For convenience sake, in this system, I make compromises. I've had the Crown since '74, so I would like to retire it, but I wouldn't sell it. So, I guess that I shouldn't be watching for the UPS truck.

An old kit brand (that is long since gone, not Dyna, Hafler, or Heath, either) made a 30 WPC amp that was basicaly a 3x8x8 inch box, give or take, with 2 input and 2 output connectors.I made one in about 1972 when I was a poor college student. It was last seen playing recital music for some dance folks in the early 1990's, having been dropped, kicked, punted, shorted, abused and stomped. It had to have a new power cord once because someone tripped and pulled it off the table and ripped the cord out of the strain relief. No problem beyond that, it didn't even have a power switch.
You notice I haven't said anything about the audio quality, then or now :)
