In the world of thick film hybrid microelectronics a recent published set of data on the use of Lead free solders for long term aged adhesion of components to thick film silver conductors shows DRAMATIC improvement with the use of 95Sn/4.5Ag/0.5Cu vs. 62Sn/36Pb/2Ag62/36/2 was(is) the industry staple for a very long time and now with the advent of CASTIN(Cu,Ag,Sb,Sn) a few years ago and it's step forward in improvement and now the improved ternary lead free solders, I'm not surprised that there may be an audible difference.
My own work 10 years ago on tin diffusion upon aging of solder joints convinced me that all was not right in solderland. I was using an Amray SEM and a Kevex detector and comparing aged 62/36/2 solder joints to thick film conductors to unaged ones and metal mapping Sn, Pb, Ag & Pd. It was clear that the tin was VERY mobile and the lead was oxidizing very badly.
95/4.5/0.5 is near eutectic with a 1 degree C plastic range 215 to 216 and a liquidus at 217C. I'll have some of this solder the end of this week, I'll let you know what I find.
Sorry... That message number is not valid.
I'm starting a Zen (SOZ) amp soon. I was going to use kester 62/36/2 but I found a very old( lb) roll of sn62 multi-core. Would it matter much which I used?
I would use fresh solder that isn't oxidized badly on the outside. It should look bright and shiny. For your application, a good eutectic alloy of Sn63 Pb37 would suffice or if you can find it, Sn96.5 Ag3.5 would work well and it's lead-free. The alloy I was refering to is probably too difficult to obtain right now but if you get lucky and find Sn95 Ag4.5 Cu0.5, go for it!

Sounds like great stuff. Where can I buy some of it for testing?
Also thanX for putting some science and hrad evidence into this....
It is kind of hard to hear and know things, but not to know why or how (for me at least)....
Ciao Thorsten
I'm getting it from Heraeus Cermalloy, near Philadelphia, PA. It comes in 10kgm bars....hehehehe, prolly not the form or the quantity you want ;-). I'm using it in a solder pot for attaching edge clip leads, so I need healthy sized bars. I believe the "gent" at Heraeus said that they buy it in Europe from Marconi, if that helps at all. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if it was available in wire.
I've been using 97Sn/3Cu for a while, and liking it. No demonstrable results to back this up, I jes like working with it, and it seems to sound good. I have been intrigued with Jennifer Crock's idea of making pairs of interconnects out of various solders and listening to them, but haven't taken the time to try it myself.
