Grid stopper resistors are in series between the wiper of the pot and the grid of the first tube. These resistors should be mounted at the grid of the tube, right at the pin, to suppress oscillations. 100r is rather small for a grid stopper; generally, they are more likely to be 1000r.Traditionally, carbon comp resistors are used. Since no current flows through the resistor, it generates very little noise. It is unlikely that there would be any difference in sound between different types of resistors; its affect on sound would be negligible.

Only carbon comp have the correct characteristics for grid stop service.
