Just to be sure, you're using a 3 ring 3.5mm plug going into your player that splits to 2 RCA plugs, correct?
The cable can be checked with a multimeter against this diagram I found.
Or another thing to try is if either of the left or right channels will only work if plugged in separately.

Thanks for the diagram.......when I used my multimeter for continuity in the Y connector, it buzzed (ok).... it is new, but must still be bad. I'll get another and try it out.
Oops, sorry, I should have also mentioned to check for cross wiring or shorts in the cable. When testing any type of cable, be it AC, speaker, interconnect, Y etc., you have to also make sure you don't get beeps when the probes are on spots where you shouldn't have continuity. I've even come across products wire backwards. Hence the diagram.Hopefully the new cable will work fine.
