Lt - the least damage you can do to the ceiling is to get some light acoustic foam with high and low sections and fasten it up with T-pins through thinner parts of the foam. I am presuming that you are renting. The pins are narrow enough to touch up the holes with a toothpick and some paint. If you aren't limited to something minimal say so for more ideas and provide the room dimensions. I have been tuning my room a little at a time. One of the things I did was build a cloud for the first reflection point on the ceiling.

"for the first reflection point on the ceiling."
yeah, that's the idea. I will think on your idea. I don't want it to look too unattractive.
Now that I am vaccinated I will be dating again and I don't want to appear to be a complete nut to my female guests :)
. I judge any sound system by how tiring it is to listen to.

Lt - hence my question about the ceiling height. Something that would look off at 8 feet up isn't as imposing on a 9 or 10 foot ceiling. If you want something that looks good go to GIK and look at their items that enable you to get your own favorite pictures on the surface but those are bass oriented, more expensive, and a couple of inches thick. If you want something cheap that looks good, is very thin (less than 1/2 inch) and works reasonably well check the link below. You could buy one box and t-pin them up at the first reflection point on the ceiling and add more if you like the effect. They are basically a stiff polyester felt. They recommend using 3M tape which is what I used on some doors in the rear wall of my listening room. I think that tape might not come off without damage if you remove it. Several other companies sell this same material so there are lots of colors available.
Myles,
Regarding t-pins, how do you use the t-pins to attach the material to the ceiling? I am thinking of buying some cotton throws but I am trying to find a way to mount them to the ceiling. I have never used t-pins but from pictures on the internet, these look like large pins with a t head. Is it just a matter of inserting the pins into the material which then is pushed into the ceiling? If so, wouldn't the pins just fall out due to the weight of the throw and gravity?
py272 - You just push them in which isn't the easiest thing. I sometimes used pliers for those locations that I couldn't quite reach. I wouldn't use the pins on the ceiling for anything with any mass but it works for light foam. I put up triangular foam around most of the the room where the walls meet the ceiling. It hasn't moved in a couple of years.
I made a cloud using very thin plywood glued to a 4' x 8' frame made of 1" x 3" poplar. I cut away about 70% of the plywood and glued acoustic foam over the entire surface. I hung it about an inch below the ceiling so it had ventilation all around. That has worked out well.
Thanks for the tips.
