In Reply to: RE: IsoDamp C-1002 Adhesive to fix between MDF shelves? posted by FlyGuy on February 12, 2021 at 09:15:33
FlyGuy:
I had an entire career doing sound and vibration at EAR who makes
the Isodamp C1002-06. A GOOD choice to do a constrained layer shelf!
You have about two choices:
If you are getting the C1002-06 with pressure sensitive adhesive on
one side, you could get some sheets of the same adhesive material, and
coat the other side. Warm the adhesive up (hair dryer); be sure to carefully align the shelf sections (maybe a jig). use plenty of pressure, and maybe let the section set with weights on it for a day or so.
If you can get un-coated sheets of C1002-06, a high quality contact adhesive would work very well (Bostick 2 part contact adhesive is great - https://www.bostik.com. Or you could use a can of brush on contact adhesive to coat both sides of the sheet, and the faces of the shelves that come in contact.
What are the surfaces of your shelves like?
Follow Ups:
Thanks for the detailed feedback, I am using IsoDamp strips as IsoDamp is hard to get in the UK, this is the strip, https://www.enrgtech.co.uk/product/foam/ET19609463/C-1002-12-PSA-1-X180--1RL, 1" wide.
The strip is has an adhesive backing on 1 side only.
The MDF shelves will have a wood veneer finish, which is matt, however I may apply oil or a lacquer for aesthetics.
There doesn't appear to be a consumer Bostick 2 part adhesive in the UK, however there is this, https://diy.bostik.com/en-UK/products/repair-assembly/contact-adhesive, would this work?

Flyguy:
For a constrained system to work properly, the center material
(in this case C1002-06) needs to be fully bonded on both sides
to the wood surfaces.
In a constrained damping system, resonant energy is dissipated
by shearing forces set up in the 3 layer sandwich when the system
flexes. These forces are concentrated in the center layer (C-1002).
In an ideal application, a high quality 2 part epoxy can be great
to cement the 3 layers together, as epoxy is very hard, and it will
"drop out" of the dynamics of the constrained system. But in my
lab experience, epoxy may not have great adhesion (or a long life?)
as an adhesive for C1002. Contact adhesives, while not being as
hard as epoxy, stick MUCH better to C1002, and will still work well
in thin layers.
The Bostick adhesive in your link is likely very good as a one part
adhesive. My experience with Bostick adhesives is that they are
VERY good. Another route might be to try a 3M spray contact adhesive,
which would be a bit less messy, and perhaps make it easier to get
even coats. 3M Hi-Strength 90 Spray Adhesive.
Thanks for all your expert advice.
My Veneerstyle Macassar Ebony https://www.slhardwoods.co.uk/products/sheet-material/mdf-veneered-2-sides-premium-a-b-grade/veneerstyle-macassar-ebony-2440-x-1220mm MDF sheet has been cut to specification and the shelfs will look great once I apply a lacquer.
I have gone down the route of the Bostik Contac Adhesive, the 3M Contact spray is a nightmare to source in the UK, and applying it would be messy as I'd have to spray the uncoated strip side and secure in place, or place the strips on the MDF then spray the strips and shelf.
I've got some excess MDF and plenty of Isodamp strip so can experiment first.
I'll post some pictures when I finish the job.

If you haven't bought it already Michael Percy likely still sell C-1002. Do you have the C-1002 already? Once again I'd call EAR.

Yes all bought 4 X 180" strips of C-1002, besides I'm in the UK, so buy time and on shipping and import tax, not economically viable, but thanks.

I myself do not see a reason to have adhesive on both sides.
