I have always preferred the sound of my speakers firmly spiked into the concrete or wood floor...
The bass is better... but hey, I'm open-minded. For some things.
Follow Ups:
I was in the same camp as you in regard to spiking right thru carpet to the concrete. Or spikes and protective disks that sat directly on the concrete, tile or wood floor.(over concrete) Then I started experimenting with decoupling in my HT set-up which is tile over concrete. All rooms and systems are different, but in my case I was able to tweak some much needed warmth into the system via decoupling vs.spike/protective disk. BTW, and to give credit where credit is due, it was actually Jim Smith ( Get Better Sound) who got me thinking in this direction a few months back.
Mick...RIght on with Jim Smith of "Get Better Sound" fame. I found his comments on the subject to be quite persuasive. I'm listening right now to Jim Brock's Tropic Affair LP the bass is deep and present. The sound is clean and clear. For me that is the goal. I find myself having longer listening sessions since decoupling. Definitely a good sign.

Speakers vary hugely in their weight and size. What would you do with 2-way monitors which normally mount on spiked stands? Would you still use the stands with spikes but then de-couple the speaker cabinet from the stand? This seems counter-intuitive to me. De-spiking the speaker stand seems even more counter-intuitive.
Sometimes this hobby conflicts with scientific principles that describe the phenomena associated with home reproduction of music, and sometimes it does make sense to the end user to violate those principles in order to achieve a more subjectively pleasing result. I am perfectly OK with that.
Yes I would try decoupling the speaker from the stand. The vibrations coming back up the stand to the speaker would then be eliminated or greatly reduced. I've never had standed speakers so I would try all the different configurations and see which coupling/decoupling set up sounds best.

I've got that book sitting on a shelf. I got it about 2 months ago and haven't had a chance to sit down with it. Going to put it into the "throne rotation" right away!
When I put my racks spikes on the gliders the bass got a lot better.
