Thanks! :-) that's good news.
I just found a 5 hours pink noise track on Youtube. Will play it sometimes at night, and some other nights it will be music.
Silmics sound quite bad for a while, can't wait for the burn-in process to be over, every time.
When I recapped my preamp (that was a lot of caps at once), I thought I had done something wrong, it sounded so thick and muffled (after sounding bright as hell for the first few hours). Then at some point midrange and treble came to life again and it was perfect. But what a pain!
When I did my Revox B226, it was my first recap and I was changing caps two by two, so the "new caps bad sound" effect was never as pronouced.
The active crossover I'm busy doing now, I've only done the input and output coupling caps so far. It's very interesting to note that two back-to-back brand new unburned Silmics II 100uF caps are still way smoother and more transparent than the old single United Chemicon 10uF polar cap.
I've read that for maximum transparency one should avoid big value caps, that's why it's so important to calculate the right value. But my experience with back-to-back Silmics makes me think it depends widely on the cap used...
Follow Ups:
You can use a resistor to simulate the input impedance of the the amp. You can use an old RCA connector with the load resistor in it. I Used to do this when I installed Black Gate caps (300 hrs. of burn in) with customers preamps that I upgraded. I would just turn on the tuner and preamp with the output of the preamp loaded with same value of the power amp's input. It's nice and quiet and you don't have to worry about wearing out the CD player using the "Repeat All" function. Leave it on for a week or two. Connect back into system, then sit back and enjoy!
I'm just turning both power amps off.
The caps i'm burning in are input and output coupling caps, in my active crossover.
Since I'm using horn loaded bass, mids, and tweeters, average sensitivity is 104dB.
That means when I play music most of the time (around 85dB at listeniong spot), there's really not much voltage going trough those caps...
I installed the new caps almost a week ago but daily listening isn't fast enough to burn them in.
Two days ago I played a track from youtube: 10hours continuous pink noise, amps turned off, preamp potentiometer at 3o'clock (wich is much, much more voltage for the following stages than any real listening conditions with my speakers, plus my preamp has lots of gain and puts out quite some volts), i let it play like that for three and a half hours, while i was away.
Well, I can't tell for sure if it's not my mind playing tricks on me, the infamous placebo effect, but the new caps seep to have opened up greatly and sound more detaled and balanced (fresh Silmics always have bloated upper bass and a dip in the presence region)
so pink noise at "high"(-er) voltage seem to be effective, much more than just regular daily playing music...
