I have done that numerous time with MDF and hardwoods. The question is with a lead sheet no MDF would not be touching each other the vibration would have to travel thru the lead sheet. The other way one could argue the vibration just travels where the MDF touches each other and by passes the lead.

A 5 sided box filled with lead shot with the top plate just sitting on the lead shot (not touching the 5 sided box at all).

Perhaps that would work.... I've often wondered what kind of measuring gear a home enthusiast could cook up to test various configurations and determine which is best.
I am always willing to spend valuable DIY time making a project look better, but I despise wasting it on tech if another, quicker method gets the same result.
