I have read on the web of a few and see some that inexpensive with pros and cons. Since the air flow and heat are fairly simple, quality would seem to be the main different in functions. But what brand/unit?
Thanks.

The reason I ask is,do you plan on removing any IC chips such as the 64 to 128 pin type? That you would need the hot air for.If you are looking for a solder sucker and soldering iron in one unit, and you use it a lot,I would look a used Weller or a Pace.I have a Pace and I love it.I bought the base unit and then the handle iron.
Now if you don't use it a lot,you can get a nice Chinese one that does all three for like 130usd on Ebay. Of course this is what we would love to have, right? LOL

unit. I occasionally lift an op amp or something a little larger and am tired of lifting a trace from time to time and would like the better quality of placing some of these smd and for the removal. I have a good temp controlled solder station so I am looking for a small hot air station.

I got one off eBay and it works fine. Let me first say I was a tech and just used a heat gun for removal and a Weller Iron with a small tip to resolder 20 pin chips in place 3that were small enough to fit two or three on a dime. I also did 64 pin square processor chips the size of a quarter with that method. The station at the link works better. It has adjustable temp for the heatgun too. For as cheap as it is I thought it would be junk but no. So I went to look it up on eBay and it now has a meter too and other features, more tips, solder wick and a chip extractor. I highly recommend it for that little money.

your experience with the unit.
I have soldered stuff that was like dust but don't enjoy doing it all that much and so easy to get solder bridging. The heat gun seems to be a better method, for me anyway and looks interesting.

$70 and free ship? Hard to go wrong. Mine is more robust and heavier than I thought it would be. I paid the same I think, Maybe 60 but it has more features and extras now.

the Surface mount IC's? There are other tools that need to be used to remove the surface mount IC's and other components. Metcal had tweezer like tools that would heat and grab the IC from both side at the same time. They would lift right up perfectly. They come in different sizes and work well.
Also there is a thing called Solder removal paste. You put it on all the leads and use the hot air blower for surface mount component removal. This would blow/move the solder away from all the leads and make the IC or other component ease to lift off without damaging the pads.
Once you have the proper tools, it is easy to remove surface mount components.
So you will need those other tools I have mentioned above along with the hot air warmer under the PCB's when doing the rework.
One other thing you must remember is that you must make sure all that desolder paste is totally cleaned off the board before trying to put on the new part. The desolder paste is conductive and with create a short if not cleaned off properly.
I just want to get the hot air tool. It will do what I need. I first started working with smd back in the early 1990's so I am familiar with them but looking for a hot air vs how I have been working with them.

The hand held or the heater/hot air blower that sits under the component?
that has the blower in the hand held unit. Some have had great success and some have had the unit go out but the manufacture seems to stay on top of it for replacements.
