The first audiophile system I listened to was at Caltech with David Boyk. He taught a music/EE class and had an audiophile system in a basement room. His speakers were the NHT 3.3s and they were absolutely impressive.I think your problem might be that you're using solid state (Classe). The Caltech audio lab at the time had The Mastering Lab tube monoblocks ($5k?, no longer available) and they were pretty darn good. You might want to look into tube equipment for yourself.
FYI they were also using a passive preamp and an older (but expensive, quality) Yamaha DAC via glass optical.

Thanks for the feedback Andrew.I was trying to avoid getting into a tube amp because of the cost, maintenance and the fact that these are only 87db/w speakers and require a bit of power to get loud. My tube pre didn't really solve the problem, despite using a pair of NOS 7308's in them.
One possible solution would be to horizontally biamp with a not-so-powerful but oh-so-sweeter tube amp for the treble. I haven't heard it, but the Audio Electronic Supply AE-25 Super Amp (reviewed in SoundStage!) might be perfect. $1k kit, $1250 assembled... 15 watts triode.Good luck with your treble harshness problem. I know exactly what you're suffering--my nOrh 6.5s are pretty neutral and accurate, so they tortured me with my inadequate upstream equipment for the longest time, until I threw more money at my CD source and got a decent (tube) preamp. Still, though, I have to do the toilet paper tweak on my tweeters to tame the brightness. I have about 12 sheets of TP covering the top half of the tweeters...
