In my main listening/home theater room i have behind my seat a wall where there used to be a foe fireplace with (see pic) fake bricks & some 12"x12" mirrors. There is also some rug where the fireplace used to sit. The room is 16'x17' and stereo does'nt sound too bad, but i cant help but feel the mirrors might be ruining the potential for better imaging. I am thinking of getting some 1"x12"x12" sound absorbing panels. I need a total of 26, but 24 will cover all but the 2 mirrors next to the floor. I was thinking of putting up a rug (nice navajo 5x8) which would have covered all the wall behind the listeners heads, but a search said this would only absorb mostly mids & highs. I do not want to lose mid/highs, just hopefully gain better sound/imaging. What does anyone think? Good idea/bad idea? Thanks for any help.Tom
Follow Ups:
The first thing to note is that 1" thick sound absorbers WILL NOT provide the best results, not enough absorption in the midbass and LF, so relatively too much in the mids and highs.
I copy down below the URL for my DIY Acoustic Treatment note, I suggest that you read it through, note the thicknesses, and the size of the panels, recommended locations, etc.
This same note also has info about DIY bass traps, which may or may not be of interest. However, most people underestimate the need for a balance of bass damping/absorption and mid and HF absorption.
I also list other acoustic treatment info that might be useful or helpful to folks.

Check out ATS Acoustics. Most reasonable option I've found in the way of acoustic treatments. Their 2'x 2' x 2" panels ( absorbing) run about $27 a piece. Very effective and not bad visually either.
i'm thinking of using. AFAIK it's more of a sound deadening/proofing product, but i'm not covering the whole wall with it.
Sound doesn't generally pass thru foam. The OC703 panels, spaced 1" from the wall will attenuate the sound coming AND going.
My only hangup with that approach is a personal dislike for burlap.
Too much is never enough
You want to loose mids & highs, if they're comming from wall reflactions and not from your speakers directly.
But I would sit as far from the wall as possible. I definitely would move the mirrors -- maybe replace them with GIK diffusors, e.g., mounted in a frame and covered with Guilford cloth. The GIKs are ugly but effective, so I'd cover them with Guilford.
"A brick wall is diffusive, which is good". Yes, but these are fake bricks which might be good or bad!? "I definitely would move the mirrors -- maybe replace them with GIK diffusors, e.g., mounted in a frame and covered with Guilford cloth." I researched Guilford cloth & some of the products they have out are expensive (read $$$). I'm trying to keep this as inexpensive as possible. Can i get this Guilford cloth from a hardware or fabric store cheaper? "I don't think it would be any uglier than the sound diffuser panels.
I'll try to find the fabric #
I bought a few yards from this website

I often use diffusion.
But IMO, it can be tricky.
If the sound we are diffusing is high enough in amplitude, or worse, the result of very uneven frequency response from a speaker's off-axis refections, the LAST thing I want to do is diffuse an unpleasant sound.
It can be great in the right application, though. I just wouldn't think of it as a first choice panacea.
Best regards,
Jim Smith
Good Idea. :)
