Any sources would be appreciated!Jeff
I'm not aware of any commercial products that use wood to make cones.Every variety of wood has it's own resonant frequency[ies], so no one type of wood would be best for all systems or components.
Shun Mook has their Ebony feet, which they claim resonates across the entire frequency range, but I seriously doubt their claims. I've experimented quite a bit with Gaboon Ebony blocks of various sizes and the resonant areas of Ebony are the upper treble and the top octave. A large block will shift these resonances downward, but it still essentially resonates in the upper range.
Mike Vans Evers makes wood tuning block sets that you could order to hear the effects that different woods have in your system. There is a High-frequency detail kit, a Mid-frequency detail kit, a "warmth" kit and a Mo' bass kit. You can contact Mike at his web site for more info. He has a white paper on system tuning that is very informative on the resonant properties of various woods.
Otherwise, look in the yellow pages for a hardwood dealer in your area to obtain exotic woods. It is hard however to find small pieces of wood to experiment with as most places just sell lumber sized pieces.
Happy experimenting,
Analogon
