You may find the passive low level filter to be purer. The quality of the capacitor is critical here. I've been playing with comparisons between a quality 4th order electronic crossover on high pass and a passive low level. With the drivers/horns I'm using I'll take the passive low level hands down. You must keep in mind you are talking about direct radiators.. not horns. I am also utilizing the natural roll off of the wave guide or horn, with your drivers the results will be very different. The Marchand XM-1 is a good inexpensive place to start experimenting with an active crossover.
Here is a link for a passive crossover:
I know that Dahlquist used to do an 18dB active LP/6dB passive HP. I'm trying to avoid the colorations of an active circuit for the HP. Some say I'll have touble achieving equal power response with dissimilar slopes, but I'm more concerned about losing transparency. Any help would be appreciated.Mike
I suggest trying it both ways and go from there. Your design is unique to both your room and your preference. The best way to see what works is to experiment, besides it can be fun.Good Luck!
Mike
