Hi,
got two 5kVA mains isolation transformers and plan to build a steep passive filter with these in series; Any recommendations?I tried one so far. In front of the whole thing the improvement is there, as soon as I had a Megamanga(by TL, see tnt-audio tip´s an´tweaks) style filter inserted in front of it. Without filtering, the isolation transformer brought up much stronger subjective dynamics and strength of expression, but was quite a deal of distortion
another thing-Capacitor types are surprisingly critical; 16.5nF against 9.5nF of the same type cap shunting from Neutral to Live makes a fairly different balanced tonality. Although I had an additional 6nF Mica cap in parallel.
However, I will have to try a lot.-)
Have you experiences with steep passive mains filters, say from 100Hz downwards(with AC at 50Hz)n ?Regards,
Philipp
Philipp-Do your isolation transformers have 4 identical windings(2 primary, 2 secondary) of the same voltage so they can be used as straight isolation, or as a step-up or step-down device? If so, you can wire them for balanced AC on the secondaries(+ - 60VAC, or + - 120VAC in the UK). Go to Jon Risch's web page for the details, or I can give them to you myself. I have balanced power for my whole system, and the improvements are dramatic. I'm an Audio Engineer by trade, and I use it every day for recording and live sound. If you can do it I think you'll be pleased.

Mike,
"Do your isolation transformers have 4 identical windings(2 primary, 2 secondary) of the
same voltage so they can be used as straight isolation, or as a step-up or step-down device?"I think so. They are also tested up to 2500 Volts
"If so, you can wire them for balanced AC on the secondaries(+ - 60VAC, or
+ - 120VAC in the UK). Go to Jon Risch's web page for the details, or I can give
them to you myself."That means I can raise the voltage in Europe/Germany to 460Volts:-)
Is that right?
Talking in Jon Rich terms I safely use double 230 volts(230 Volts on both) on the primary, and separate the secondaries for two 230Volt lines.
"I have balanced power for my whole system, and the
improvements are dramatic."
using the isolation in 1:1 single transformer configuration it sounds a bit distorted, though the transformers should be of good quality.
The bass and overall dynamics have greatly increased." I'm an Audio Engineer by trade, and I use it every day for
recording and live sound. If you can do it I think you'll be pleased."Thanks for your kind answer,
if it is safe I HAVE to give it a tryRegards,
Philipp
Two 5kVA transformers can't be cheap. Why not consider a Cinepro 20 line balancer ?
Hi,"Two 5kVA transformers can't be cheap. Why not consider a Cinepro 20 line balancer ? "
JUST recognized HOW expensive new units are. There has been a large stock of NOS units in Munich, which needed to be cleared.

Philipp
