I just installed the $250 Room Tunes kit, it worked wonders on controlling the bass in my L shaded room of 14x25x8 high. I simply could not imagine (and wouldn't enjoy) a room filled with thick panels and corners filled with bass traps - not inviting to me & crazy expensive (as you found out). This kit is small, hides from view easily & is much cheaper than most routes I looked into. You can find the adds for this kit on Audiogon, just search Room Tunes or Michael Green Audio. Eighth Nerve also has a similar kit.
If you're room is not treated whatsoever, you are in for a HUGE shock once you install a system to control the room. you get WAY more than you bargain for with proper acoustic treatment. $ very well spent in my limited experience.
Follow Ups:
A Room Tunes Kit is NOT going to control a 50 Hz room mode with any significance.Yes, it probably will help provide a superior overall room acoustic, but the materials included do not have the sheer amount of absorbing power to deal with 50 Hz, just not feasible.
In point of fact, to do something significant for a 50 Hz room mode one is going to HAVE to deal with as many bass traps as can be included in the room and budget.

Agreed. I have 40 traps in my living room, and the response and ringing are excellent all the way down to the lowest mode at 31 Hz. Proof below. Yes, the lowest 31 Hz mode still rings a little longer than the others, but it's still vastly improved over what it was like before I had that many traps. More important, it's the clearest sounding room you'll ever hear. Even very low bass runs are crystal clear - all notes are equally audible and have equal weight and timbre.

.............One cannot control room modes on the cheap. One can Band-aid it, but it would be futile.Bass traps, whether they be 1/4, 1/2 or full round, are the only real solution to passive room mode(s) control. One can also deal with it in the digital domain BUT this will be limited in it's range...not to mention the line signal insertion losses/degradation.
ASC products are on the spendy side but they are the most effective and the highest quality products in the Acoustic science field today.
*I am not affiliated with ASC in any way, just one very satisfied customer*
