Hi,any magic tweaks for my Cambridge CD6 ?
Where can I get a circuit diagram for this lovely cd-player ?
Thank you,
dst
Hi there,This is what I did and what worked for me. First double the capacitance of the servo board psu and bridge the electro's with some good 220 nf film cap's (wima mkp for example) and a styroflex 10 nf cap. This made a great difference, I used sprague 4700 uf cap's for this. Second I gave the clock psu it's own transformer, 15 V secondary, this gave some improvement. You could replace all ceramic 100 nf cap's with better wima mks4 or ero mkt film types, should give some improvement. Try to dampen tha case and the chips. Use oscon cap's for decoupling of all the digital's psu's.
Good luck, JZ
Hi,thanks for the information.
Any experiences with replacing the clock or the opamps. There is a NE5534 near the DAC and an AD712 (per channel). What is their task?
I replaced the NE5534 with a socket and tried an OP627 and an AD744/AD811-combination (Walt Jung) which I had. There was an improvement but I don't know if these are the best chips in this place.
dst
dst,I have also replaced the opamps and I've tried opa 2604 and 2134. Eventually I settled for the 2134 but I can't say if the difference is worth the trouble or if there was any difference at all. I think the opamps are used for a line driver and an output buffer but I'm not sure about this. You can't change the I/U conversion on this player since it is incorporated in the dac using some sort of 5534 (I guess)which is probably one of the players biggest problems. As for other clock modules because I heard some rather discouraging stories about them, not about sound perfomance but about technical problems by the way, I haven't tried that. The usage of oscon's (made by sanyo)can give a lot more improvement from my point of view and is a lot cheaper to.
good luck, JZ
Hi JZ,thanks again.
Which Oscon-Caps with which values did you use?
My supplier can deliver the Oscon-SA, -SH and -SC series, but I think the SG-series is the one for audio use. Do you know the differences?
dst
DST,Oops I didn't even know they had different series. Anyway Until now I could only use 33 uF / 20 V types as these where the only ones I could get and they worked great as a replacement for the 47 uF and 100 uF types, they seem to behave a bit different in the case of their values. My supplier told me I should try to come as close as I can to the original value but may NOT go higher. As for the different series I'd say you want to go for the series with the lowest leakage current and ESR, I think these are the purple coloured ones as far as I remember.
Good luck, JZ
Hello JZ,thank you very much for answering my questions.
BTW: All the Oscon caps I know have a purple colour. You can find more information about them on www.rs-components.de/rot/light/index2.htm (search for "Oscon").
Regards, dst
DST,I hope you get some good results, the player is worth it. I forgot about the diagrams by the way. One source is "Audio Partnership" england, they where very helpfull to me when i aked for the schematics. Another might be you're local distributor/importer. Cambridge audio itself is rather reluctant to give info I experienced.
Good luck and have fun, JZ
