In Reply to: Can The Ikea Racks Be Cut to Shelves? posted by Mister Pig on March 4, 2006 at 09:34:45:
If you cut the sides of the Lack tops, the edges will now be exposed. They will show the innards of the tops which look like a mix of wood, paper and some other stuff. I would get some Wilsonart laminate and edge band the sides of the cut tops. Then again, considering the trouble, I would just stick to Ken's original recipes (lesson to be learned from the makers of "classic" Coke: if it ain't broke ...)

Follow Ups:
The steel frames tht the slelf sits in would cover all the edges. So thats not an issue. But I was thinking the esposed edges may not be as rigid before they were cut. That could be an issue.
The load carrying capacity & rigidity of the Lack's cellulose honeycomb lattice will not be compromised to any notable degree. However, I know of no Target supports, including the TT3, that have a framework depth sufficient to hide the full 2" thickness of the Lack's top.

Cellulose Honeycomb Lattice!?? Please.
IN English: Crappy cardboard eggcrate.. Exactly like the very Cheapest Grade Interior Doors sold at Home Depot or in yer Average Tailer.

Inexpensive and makes for a suitably rigid, relatively high strength, low mass,non-resonant structure with good damping properties and a benign residual back-reflected signature.

Yup you are right. 2 inches is way to thick for the rack to hide. Probably would be better to build the standard IKEA rack then.
... you could buy Neuance platforms from Ken Lyons (the person who initially devised the Lack Rack). I believe that they can be made to order so they would fit nicely into the Target frame. This is high on my list of things to do but I've just been too busy ...
