I'm just toying with the idea at the moment, but I took a quick look at the PS board from my Toshiba 3109. I'm a real novice, so I'd appreciate any thoughts, corrections, or cautions.1. The filter cap is a single 100uf 200V. There is *a lot* of room for a larger cap, but what size? Also, I'm not seeing any 200V rated ~100uf electrolytics (for instance, Nichichon or -- gulp -- Black Gate in, say, Percy's catalog) -- any thoughts on the necessary voltage rating? Alternately, it would probably be very easy to add bypass cap(s) here (0.1uf film and foil?)
2. The four diodes for (presumably) rectification are also very easy to get at, and well-spaced. I can't identify them, but am I right in assuming that the demands on them are pretty modest and that I could replace them with just about any 'ol fast-recovery type (i.e. say, 600V 3A and up)?
3. There is a cluster of four caps 820uf 16V. These are pretty tightly spaced -- is there any reason to upgrade these to, say, 1000uf 16V Nichicon?
Finally, is there a good reason to undertake any of these other than for curiousity? (If it matters, due to the pending death of my faithful but tired Rotel 855 I am now using the player as my main cd transport). Has anyone done similar upgrades with worthwhile effects?
Thanks for your input, --daryl
Eric, Thanks for your comments -- it sounds (or looks?) like this is worth pursuing. For sure I'll upgrade the diodes to HEXFREDs.--daryl (good luck with your Link!)
I bypassed the Power supply cap with 0.1uf Solen that i have at hand but the biggest improvement is replacing the 4 rectifier diodes with Hexfreds- video quality is like an improvement to S-video and audio quality - i like it better than my Link (There must be something wrong with my Link)
Thanks for the input about the benefits of replacing the rectifier diodes with FREDs. I am using a Monarchy DIP MKII and wasn't sure if the benefit would be that great given that the DIP is taking care of jitter. However, the benefit to video is reason enough to spend the few $$ and little amount of time it would take to do it.I am sorry to hear that your Link isn't sounding that great. I thought after you performed the initial mod that it sounded great? Are you still using the same adjustable voltage regulators? If so, then try getting a pair of fixed voltage ones and see if that helps any. I used fixed voltage VR's in mine that cost me about $3 total and they work great. My Link has never sounded better...good luck and thanks for the input about the DVD player.
