Thank you for your response. The Lack does seem like an elegant, effective solution. I do plan on ditching the flexy design (use of threaded rods), but I really want to keep the maple shelves. They look damn good in the same room as the maple record shelves I made last year in woodworking class; and, though they may not take as much advantage of constrained layer damping or the light-and-stiff approach as the Lacks, maple seems to be a popular component support material around here.
