I just fell into (free) a 1KVA GE 480/240-240/120V industrial control transformer that looks like it would be great for a balanced power supply. There is, however, no external indication that is has an electrostatic shield. Might it still be useful for a balanced power supply or did somebody just give me a hefty door stop?
My transformer is also an industrial like yours. Mine did not indicate a shield either, upon opening the cover I found a wire soldered to the case that the transformer is mounted in. If you find similar, thats the shield wire. You can test the transformers ability to balance your power by measuring the difference between the two 60 volts sections. Mine came out to be within 1 or 2 tenths of a volt of each other.
Thanks for your thoughts. That's exactly what I meant by "no indication" of an electrostatic shield, there is no wire grounded to the frame. Short of x-raying the thing, I have no idea how to tell if there's a shield, but is suspect not. I'm sure it will produce 60-0-60V, but I suspect that the lack of a shield may decrease the noise-limiting ability of the transformer.
If convienient, let me know if it improves your system. Thanks!
