I imagine they use a ceramic base for the item and either vapor deposit a metalic layer or use metal particles in the ceramic substrate.Am I on the right track or completely off base?
I totally agree with your feelings about switches. My favorite are solid silver switches which are very expensive and still sound worse than direct connections any day of the week.
And a good pot has the potential of sounding as good or better than a stepped attenuator. You just have to be brave and try your options and trust what your ears are telling you.
I was not expecting a big difference between the cermet pot and the ALPS Black Beauty Pots. Boy was I 100% wrong!

Close.
The resistive material (usually ruthenium oxide) is mixed with ceramic powders and a binder and then it's silk-screened onto a ceramic substrate, like aluminum oxide, and are then fired. However it's heated just short of melting, in a process called sintering where the elements combine but do not actually melt. The binder just vaporizes.

Yeah. Though I wasn't saying that switched attenuators necessarily sound bad. Some sound very good to me. And others perfer them over potentiometers. I was just addressing Bare's implication that there's something more pure and simple about a ladder attenuator versus a pot.

Yup. Though suggesting people try things for themself and decide for themself what sounds best to them is frowned upon by the moderator here. I was threatned with being banned if I ever suggested such a thing again so be careful what you say around here.

Yup. Nothing beats one's own personal experience.
For me, my preference is for the hot molded carbons, which is why I asked what type you had bought.
