You're right. That's more information than I EVER wanted to know on braiding! :)
Interestingly, I once made a maru dai (used for kumihimo) to see if it would help speed up the braiding process. While it may work well for yarns and threads, it didn't work well at all for wire. At least not the solid core wire I'm using.
