How low can you go with a TC90K (2nd order )?
How about with the TC90Tdx (2nd order)?
...I can tell you that the tioxid tweeter can handle gobs of power.
Fragile and delicate are two words I would not associate with this tweeter. I have heard it crossed @ 2600Hz 3rd order and I will agree with Clayton that 3-3.5K would sound better (especially 2nd order). HTH -CJB
...that if going low is a requirement the Morel MDT-33's would be a good choice.
I would not go any lower than 3 kHz. Just curious to why you are interested in these tweeters. They will not take much power, and for the same price they cost, Morel makes some excellent ones. I am not trying to tell you what to choose, but these are not the easiest to work with. What other drivers are you thinking about using to mate with them?Clayton
Who said the Focal T's can't take much power? They are used to great effect in studio near field monitors by KRK as an example. Yeah they aren't 1000 watt bursts like Dynaudio, but they ain't real fragile either. Along the lines of a Vifa or SEAS in toughness. A problem that concerns me with low xover points stems more from the fact that they don't have interchangeable voice coils (at least K version didn't last time I looked). I used a set of Focals for many years with 100 watt Clip-O-Matics amps, second order (with supporting circuits) and never burnt one.A true second order with notch filter for the tweeter FS can do the 2500, but I don't think they sound there best there. The 3K to 3.5K is better sounding, not so stressed/buzzy. Focal JMLab uses 3 to 3.5K alot in their setups, hard to falt the manufacturers ideas.
Even without clipping...the fragile little VC will come unwound with a 2ND order crossover. The Studio monitors' usually use a 4th or even a 5th order on them. I barbecued one once with a Dynaco ST70 on a classical cresendo, using 2nd order at 3K. Upon inspection...about 8 windings came off the former...and it rattled after that. Probably was running about 20 watts RMS at the time. Also cooked a pair at 2nd order with a McIntosh 2105. Meters were at about -6 dB.They cannot be used this way and last. I do not like the sound at 4th order....and remember...they really were intended to be X-overed above 4K. The therory of double your resonant FQ.
just trolling, but I laughed so hard Id like to thank you EDP!
Just going by my experience. About three years ago I did a design that use the TC90TdxB shielded version with the Seas 6.5" aluminum cone woofers. Had one of the TC90TdxB's go out on me after about a month. Used them for HT so I played them pretty load, Had them xo at 3 kHz with a 3rd order (back in my higher order filter days). May have just been faulty to begin with. Talking about the Dynaudio's not being fragile, about a month ago, I was working on my phono pre-amp. It had some bad bi-polars. The only way I was getting any sound at all was turning the pre-amp volume wide open. I forgot that I had it wide open and after replacing the bi-polars, I put on an album. I went spastic when the blaring racket came out of the speakers. It took me a good 15 seconds to figure out what to do (like I said, I went spastic). No damge. I also designed a 3-way for my daughter's college graduation using a Morel MDT-20 and the 4" Audax CF, with a OEM 12" woofer, using series xo. I miswired the xo by putting the input where the output should be and the output where the imput should be. All of the low end was going to he MDT-20. It was bottoming out for a couple of minutes before I figured out something was wrong. It survived also. I am definantly getting "old timers" disease. I don't do xo wiring anymore when I am tired.Clayton
While it's good that nothing incurred any damage when you were suffering your "mental lapse's", i'm glad to see that i'm not the only "big dummy". Like you, most of my mistakes have been when i was trying to get caught up and was working when i should have been sleeping. I don't do that anymore. It's WAY too expensive and frustrating. There's nothing like blowing out a matched quad of transistors that run $25 apiece because you installed them BACKWARDS in the circuit !!! That's the one that taught me my lesson. Luckily, you got off cheap !!! Sean

Yep, should never mess with gear when you are tired. I did not mention it, but that is why I had some bad bi-polars. I was adapting the pre-amp right on the TT so that the teflon covered silver tonearm wire I had installed would go straight to the phono pre-amp with no connectors. Well, I under-estimated the clearance between the MDF platform I had fashioned under the TT plith, and when the TT sat on it,it caused a new resistor that I had not trimmed the leads to short enough, to short out on a bare copper wire by-pass jumper I had installed on the pre-amp board. The resistor heated up and started smoking. I now work only when clear of mind (which is not to often);)Clayton
