How deep are your windows? You could try to build frames ala Jon Risch panels which would fit into the window cut-out.

Look at Jon's site on Geocities for detailed plans. I also have some photos of free-standing versions of these panel in the photo gallery here, and some discussion of the construction here in the tweak forum in the last month or two.
