Mine were (whisper!) Bose 301 drivers whose surrounds had completely disintegrated. They had been up in my attic for 15 years or so.After removing all the loose surround with my fingers I checked that the cones still moved in and out the voice coil without scraping. I was in luck and this makes repair even easier. If it scrapes the surround has to be encouraged in one direcion to centralise the voice coil. If it is bad, the dust cover has to be cut out and shimms used to hold the coil centrally until the surround glue sets.
I used rubbing alcohol and a cotton bud to soak the bits of the surround left on the cone and the metal frame. I found a 1/4" wood chissel ideal for scraping away the crud a bit at a time, adding morealcohol as soon as the scraping became difficult. It took about 30 mins to completely clean up the cone edge and frame.
The supplied glue is what I know as polysyrene cement (don't tell me you never made an Airfix Kit!), so needs a few minutes to dry.
It was easy to run a thin bead round the cone edge (about 3-4mm wide) and drop the new surround on to it. The glued bit tended to curl up as the adhesive dissolved into it. This caused a moment of panic but I continuously ran a finger tip around it and the glue set in a couple of minutes with the surround perfectly glued and smooth.
Checked coil alignement again ....
Repeat the procedure by running a bead of glue between the outer edge of the surround and the frame below it. Again run a finger tip around to smooth out the waves and ripples as the glue penetrates the foam, frequently checking the coil alignement.
It is at this stage that bias needs to be applied to push the surround in one direction to pull the coil into alignement IF it scrapes. I was lucky and had no problem.
One hour later I had two drivers that looked as good as new.
I ripped out the Bose crossover and repointed both drivers facing forwards, then added a 20R adjustment pot in series with the tweeters to give me quite a nice pair of near field monitors for my "Vinyl to CDR" PC setup. The drivers certainly kick! Not bad for $US10 (plus another ten to ship to the UK).
