Driver wanted to try out a set of my Stillpoints, so I removed them from under my speakers. I gave one set to Driver and decided to play around a bit more with the other set under my SACD player. As mentioned in an earlier post, I had initially placed the Stillpoints under my speakers and had liked the effect so much that I decided to leave them there. I will be putting them back in once Driver is done with his audition as I already miss them. The bottom line is that the Stillpoints did not perform at the same level as the Magix, Relaxa or Bright Star combo as a source isolator. I tried them points up and points down. I also tried moving them around to various locations under the SACD player. In no case was I able to reproduce the degree of improvement resulting from the use of these other devices. I found that the Stillpoints cleaned up the sound, creating better dilineation within the soundstage, but they also made performances sound smaller and less energetic. Furthermore, there was a change in the tonal character of the music, a whitening of the sound, which I did not hear with the others. When I placed the Relaxa back under my SACD player it was obvious that the Stillpoints were not a good fit with my system as a source isolator.
The Stillpoints are beautifully made and extremely well packaged. It is clear that a lot of care and energy was put into their design and manufacture. They appear quite robust and I imagine they could support almost any audio component. Their low profile (slightly less tall than the Vibrapods) requires the use of risers under components with tall feet (unless, of course, you want to remove the existing feet). They are quite heavy and there is a feeling of quality about these cones which sets them apart from many of the other devices I've been trying.
Based on my experience thus far during the "Isolation Devices Binge" ( I have now demoed Relaxa, Bright Star, Vibrapods, Aurios, Still Points, Polycrystal, Black Diamond, Hip Joints, Magix and SSC Pucks) I am going to make a gross generalization. Cones work well under speakers but are outperformed by other isolation devices on source components.
More to come as I'm still awaiting the delivery of a few items. If anyone is dying for me to try a specific isolation device, let me know. I've gone this far, I might as well go a little further.
Follow Ups:
have you tried partially inflated mylar ballons? along with the platfom of choice and diy freeze plug roller blocks (check the archives), i have found them to be an important part of a very effective and cheap isolation system.

What's a freeze plug roller block?

Constrained layer types, Symposium, Neuance and ultra rigid types, Black Diamond, other exotic material shelves.. The names aren't flying from my lips at 2:45 AM!

I am going to visit a friend of mine today who owns some of the Symposium shelves and blocks. If I can't convince him to give me a loaner, I'll bring along a few of my toys and we'll to do a little comparison in his system (Avantegarde Uno speakers, 47 Labs transport/dac, Audio Note M2 preamp, Fi and Kondo Niero amps). We were planning on comparing my Butler to his amplifiers, but we may have to throw a little isolation into to mix. I'll let you know.

You'rea good man Zog! ;- ) I plan to build a few clones when my arm allows. I aquired the materials just before the injury. The "experts" are saying 6 months to a year :- (

Bummer about the arm. My buddy Driver was also laid up for a long time with an arm injury. At least it gave him some extra time to play around with our favorite hobby. Hope there is some upside for you too.Bad news on doing the Symposium/Relaxa comparison. My buddy's gear is set up "just so". He didn't really want to start moving stuff around. He's got some very tweaky cables and we actually damaged some of them doing the Fi/Butler comparison. So ..... unless I want to drop some more coin, which I am hesitant to do (believe me, I've already spent way too much money) I'm not sure I'm going to get to hear a Symposium. Sorry.

Oh Well!.... The only reason I requested the platforms(besides my intrest) was your request. I beleive you have your hands full as it is! Thanks concerning your comments about my arm. I hope I don't sound like I'm whinning. Diver, if your reading this, my best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery. Y'all keep up the good work. I think this experiment will be a great resource in the archives.

I use syposium platforms under all my electronics. They are very good, but they are better on top of siesmic sinks(or equivalent).
I wouldn't be without these combos now.
