howsabout telling us what's special about Rio Linda? Where th hell is it, for a start!Regards,
Howdy, Andy!
howsabout telling us what's special about Rio Linda? Where th hell is it, for a start!
Rio Linda's a small town just outside of Sacramento, California, and is known for being home to a lot of rednecks with cars up on blocks in their front yards, etc.
Before conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh went to New York and became the Rush Limbaugh that he is today, he had a local show here in Sacramento on KFBK where he was brought in to replace Morton Downey, Jr. who had just been fired for saying the word "Chinaman" on the air.
Anyway, some of Rush's more unusual callers were from Rio Linda. The most famous one was when Rush was doing a spoof of backward masking on records where he said that if you played Slim Whitman albums backward, you could hear the devil speaking.
He played some Slim Whitman song backwards with a voice-over of the devil, saying such things as "Hey, where'd you get a turntable that plays backwards? Usually you only find those in preacher's homes..."
Well, some guy from Rio Linda called in and said that he had every Slim Whitman album and that he played them backward and couldn't hear anything from the devil. He was being serious.
Rush told him that he needed a "disgronificator" for his turntable and told him to go down to Turntables Unlimited and ask for one.
Anyway, because of this and other bizarre calls from people in Rio Linda, Rush, when he'd use a "big word" would sometimes interject "and for those of you in Rio Linda that means..."
It became one of Rush's trademark catch phrases and he continues to use it to this day.
So there ya have it. :)

Oh, it's easy to remember. All the more fashionable homes in Rio Linda have cars up on blocks in the front yard. :)

I'm a bit of an Anglophile and knew a lot of us Yanks would be scratching their heads over that one. Perhaps I should have left out the Rio Linda comment. :)se
