Could be something else but I'll rule out my cdp or phono since the problem remains for either source. My amp is an unmodified ASL Tulip which I don't associate with this hardness. Probably the modded pre. The upgraded caps are Black Gates and Auricaps which have a pretty good rep. I suppose the increased resolution may have highlighted weaknesses in the chain. The only questionable replacement was a pair of 16 pF silver mica caps (C11 and C24 if you care to look at the pre schematics, right after the wiper). Maybe I could replace the original plastic stereo pot and see if I notice any trace of this steeliness.http://www.ys-audio.com/ys-audio_eng.htm
go to world circuits, Audiable Illusion (sic) Mini Mite

That might not be a bad idea if it's not too much trouble.
When you make multiple changes at the same time, it's impossible to know for certain what change was responsible for what result.

As a scientist, I know the importance of controlling your variables, but damn, I'm just too impatient when it comes to audio. I want great sound and I want it now! I guess I'll have to back track. Cheers.

guilty of this, just not patient enough but after a few times of not liking what I heared then I stopped doing this and would listen closely and wait a few days before going on to the next part. Some advice when doing upgrades do one at a time and please let the components break-in for about 70-100 hours because the sound can change to something wounderful or something nasty. I have used both Auricaps and Black Gates, both need a lot of break-in especially the Black Gates.Auricaps at least 100-150 hours
Black Gates at least 200-300 hoursThe hours listed above can vary depending where they're used but this is what I have experienced.
I hope this helps!
