I just bought the best in class, highly rated Sangean PR-D18 and the sound quality is horrible. I'm not trying do to an audiophile thing here but the exaggeration of sibilance is horrible, I am maybe more sensitive to others in my dislike of exaggerated sibilance. I don't want to try another Sangean. It's looks fine buts sound real bad. Is there a medium sized portable out there that actually sounds good, not tinny, no exaggerated sibilance!! Reception didn't seem so good either. Maybe I'm asking to much. Like to keep it under $60. Happy New year. Tweaker

I'll second the GE Superadio III if you can find one. It has a large woofer and small tweeter for good sound quality. Separate bass and treble tone controls and ample volume capability. Using its built-in antennas AM reception is far superior to almost any current home radio, and FM is also fine (mono only). External antennas can be connected giving even better reception in stationary use. The long linear tuning dial isn't well calibrated and cranking the tuning from one end to the other is tedious, but this does allow for precise tuning. Selectable AM bandwidth and defeatable FM AFC add versatility under difficult reception conditions.
Built right in my home state Bridgeport CT. Had it recapped. Easily picks up Toronto stations at night. Rated for 800 hrs on 9 volts.
I second the super radio and it has the best AM section of any radio made today AFAIC.

Just what you need.
I have a lot of radios, and to buy something truly satisfying under 60 bucks is tough.
If it were me, I would simply buy a Sony ICF-2010 (assuming it is portable enough) and be done with it. If you ever want to sell it, you will get your money back. It will blow the budget though.
One semi-portable with great sound is the GE SR III. Nice big speaker and runs forever on D cells. The tuning is a bit imprecise, but it is usually cheap and the sound is probably untouched for the price.
For a true portable, I use a Sangean DT-400W. It is around your budget and well made.

He reviews a lot of radios with good insight. He does like the PR-D18 though. :-)
Thanks for the reply(s). Jay Allan likes the radio that I could not listen to for even 3 minutes it was soooo irritating. It spit like there was no tomorrow. Tweaker
There is a Realistic 12-665 on eBay now for well under your budget. 16.95 buy it now plus ship. Uses 4 C's or AC. Only thing is it has tone, not bass & treble. Good sound, selective. It was 40 something in the 70's/80's.

These two Panasonic's are nice with the latter having bass/treble controls. The prices are low now but they are auctions. Have a look, they are on the bay as well.

I suspect the Proton sounds better, but if you can listen to both, then listen to both.

Great radio but not portable nor is one likely to find one within his $60 budget. All the ones on the bay are over $100. Oh wait that's the rechargeable portable but its $200 new.ET

Yes Sir, you are right... the 9 volt battery is only for power failures and the clock to keep working.

... or earlier Yacht Boy 400 and/or YB400PE versions. They're all equally fine performers. Replace thin stock speaker wiring with 16 gauge to closely replicate Grundig's classique warm tone. 73s para Sactown
I had a YB400PE as my first shortwave radio in the early 200s. Excellent-sounding FM, from what I remember.
