Great.
So, what antenna did you invest thought, skill, time and money in, as well?

Timbo,
Only AFTER I moved my inside-garage generic-rabbit-ears
was I able to hear good sound. My other tests were done
under poor(but somewhat constant) reception conditions---NOT very smart
I know. Frankly I just forged ahead. Also cant determine if the improved sound was due to better modern parts or the age of the old ones...
My cement-tile roof/metal-door and community restrictions prevent a proper
antenna.
YES, having improved this tuner does motivate me to get my antenna
act together.
best regards
:-)! Go to AA's FAQ and read the Rhombic article from the old 'Audio' magazine? You will realise that knowing where your target transmitters are is vital. The US site called FM Fool can help with that.
Driving a good tuner real hard - with an antenna with a fair bit of gain - is the best (only?) way to maximise its sound quality.
It helps that I have a national classical FM network, and one local community arts station with just a bit of fixed compression.
