I don't believe you're supposed to use anything more than canned compressed air on the variable capacitor fins.
One thing I've always meant to do (read: another lazy ass here) is to clean the variable capacitor bearings, and repack them with conductive silver grease. I believe the late, great Bill Thomas gave details on this procedure on the Dynaco Doctor forum.
I read it somewhere...Too lazy to search. [insert annoying smiley thing here]
Good luck with your FM-3. What a lush, musical sound mine produces!
Follow Ups:
Very little to NO multipath in the way of the stations- FM here sounds incredible. Can't vouch for musical taste however, so I only listen to the two NPR stations (89.1 locally, and IIRC, 90.1 from a little farther out).
Point noted about the canned air. I'll JFGI regarding the article. Maybe between the adverts for cheap (insert any item here) and the know-it-alls, I might find it!

Yesterday got downstairs for a short time. Switch on the FM and nothing listenable. Everything destroyed by multipath. Hate aurora spellcheck.

The same ten rock songs on every station.... Kinda like a certain Classic Rock station (that starts with the letter Q) in T.O.!

A query please for Dman:
You mentioned an article by Sequerra on the FM-3, can you please post a link or reference? Here are some other FM-3 articles, courtesy of user nerdorama on Audiokarma:
Audio Amateur 4/86 FM-3 Rework by Ben Poehland
Glass Audio 1/91 Impriving Dyna's FM-3 by James Lin
Glass Audio ?/? FM-3 Mods Letter to editor by Vincent Mogavero
AVA article Keeping the Dyna FM-3 Working
Valve (Bottlehead) souped up FM-3 3/1998
Valve (Bottlehead) Buddhafying the Dyna FM-3 1/1999
I have mentioned David Bernning, and his mods (particularly his recalculated PEC modules). My mentor did mention something to me many moons ago that Richard (dick) Sequerra did, but I can't recall if it was from a mag or where. Heck, my mentor might have even asked Dick directly, as he was quite chummy (as the "new kid" with the old guard (Klipsch, Hafler, Pearson, etc...)...
Wish I could help out more... I'll have to take a look when I get home (I am staying at a Holiday Inn Express, so maybe I'll feel smarter in the morning!)...
Cheers,

Thanks! I remember Berning being mentioned in the Audio Amateur or Glass Audio article. I think the FM-3 fanclub would be interested in any inputs from Sequerra.
Yes, indeed!
