I am intersted in biuilding either the Consonance Joplin or Ella kit. My question is what is the differance in sound quality between a PP el34 and a PP 2a3 amplifier?? I know the el34 has alot more power, but the 2a3 has about 12wpc which is more than enough with my Klipsch RF-3s. Or should I just go with the Billie 300b kit?? Which amp would you recomend for loud rock music?
thanks

FWIW, I have an Ella and have come to realize that you can modify the amp in several possible ways to get some different sounds from it and/or match it better to certain speakers/rooms. These mods range from pretty easy to a little more involved. If you are interested in anything like that then I would recommend the ella. Nothing wrong with it stock either, btw (the ella is up there with the foreplay for the best deals in tube audio, imo). For example, a nice trick that I have discovered is that if you connect the el34s as triodes, bias them at 65mA, connect 8ohm speakers to the 4ohm taps and partially/totally remove global feedback you will have a very nice sounding 15W class A amp. Thats all my 90dB/W speakers need mostly. Another trick is to disconnect AC drive to one el34 per channel when its running class A. Then you get a single ended output for <5W. Or if you want PP 2a3 you can adapt the amp to use the 2a3 (octal/6.3v) equivalent 6b4g from sovtek for ~15W cl.AB. Here you'd need to make some changes to the bias and driver circuits, however.
I can provide more details if you're interested. I can't comment on 2a3s vs el34s yet becasue I have been satisfied with el34s in triode for now. This amp can totally rock, imo. I'd go for a PP amp if you like loud rock (though se 300bs may work for some speakers).
hope that helps
