Thanks for the response. I would have thought so that Mullard didn't make KT88. The structure inside looks the same as GEC.Tim, I read the yahoo groups about KT88 shootout. It really enlighten my knowledge about the tube. However I wish I can have a report on GEC TT21 as well. I don't know whether soundwise it would be the same as regular GEC KT88.
Ferry,Unfortunately, GEC TT21 and TT20 seem to start production at a much later stage.
There is no pre-1960 top getter only GEC TT21 or TT22 available. More TT21 you are find today are even 1970's vintage.
Compare the TT21 to GEC KT88 of similar vintage, the TT21 does seem to sound a bit more powerful and also a bit more refined at the same time.
If money/availability is of less concern, early vintage GEC KT88 is more desirable IMHO.
Tim,Interesting enough I have a pair of TT21 with top getter only.
The early vintage GEC KT88 you mention, is it the top getter only version and followed by triple getter with brown based ? (not counting the rare ST shape)

TT21 is let say same tube accept one thing is 50W disspation.
When you use the TT21 in place of KT88 they simple draw around 10%-20%
more current.Just why many people say they sound better.
The output and power trafos run a little hotter.
........oooooooooooooh ! Tricky one ! I've seen this sort of thing before . In my Mullard / AM Ball , Bernards Valve data etc books there are no entries for KT88 under the Mullard manufacturer's section . I doubt they relabelled the KT88 as their own , these may be IEC 'Mullards' which could be anything / made anywhere . If these are on Ebay , post the link .

Look like GEC to me . The problem I have with IEC 'Mullards' is that a lot of them are not what they say they are . I consider a Mullard to be a valve produced on Philips/Amperex/Mullard production lines . KT88 was not produced by them and does not appear in any of their literature . For instance I was given an IEC ECC83 to test which had 'Mullard made in Gt Britain' on the side with the IEC logo . Turns out that the etch codes indicated manufacture in India . No disrespect to Indian engineers but this example was not very uniform inside and did not test well either , very bad mismatch between sections , very uncommon even for a used Mullard ECC83 . It cost the gentleman concerned $45 on Ebay .
GEC with Mullard stamp.
