I too have tried the JJ 6DJ8. Would have the same observations concerning the tube right out of the box. After a couple of hundred hours, it did mellow a bit, but still retained all the qualities that it first had. I did not care for this tube.

I do agree that things can chance a bit after some time, especially tubes since they are on a slow down-hill decline after that first turn on. I just have never had anything radically change in character after some time. If I didn't care for the sound new, I generally won't like it any better after 'break-in'. The JJ was a good example. Didn't care for it out of the box; after a few hundred hours disliked it less, but still did not care for the tube.
