Maybe they understand the Wave 8 is a PP pentode amp, but want to see what 8 wpc can do before they invest in a 300B-based SET?If the Wave 8 had its 6BM8 output tubes in parallel SET configuration, a pair of the amps would only about equal a Decware Zen in power (2 wpc). They might sound good (I have a Decware SE84C and it sure does) but then you are really confined to high-sensitivity speakers or modest listening levels (not as low as you might think but still pretty modest.)

I probably misunderstood the Listener article as well; I 'm not going to get it now as I have to pack the Family for our "Escape from New York Weekend". To be honest, all my weekends are like that during the summer. It is an art to cultivate people with summer homes who need company. Unfortunately none are audiophiles. Thanks to some friends generous with time and advice, I hope to seg-way into SET with Bottlehead products. A year ago I had an ear opening experience in Bottlehead land and I knew that if I could get something close I would be happy. My Redpoint turntable will have to wait until next year. Speakers are the main stumbling block to the whole enterprise naturally. But there is hope.
I might have toyed with the idea of the Wave 8's, certainly may people have found them satisfying, but I know that since I have an inkling of what I need, I'm sure that I would have been disappointed. I am sure, as well, that other ASL products would fit the bill, and I do not want to knock the Wave 8 or ASL. But with all of the Listener reviews then they don't need my input.
Again thanks for the (further) clarification.
Gregg,Don't let the lack of high efficiency speakers slow you down. I started with Bottlehead amps (Paraglows) and preamp driving 92 dB efficient speakers. Sounded very nice to me and others commented favorably as well. Of course, now that I've built my Straight 8's I'm even happier.
Good luck in your efforts to enter "SET land!"
