Just curious. While doing a search on the 12FQ7, a number of inmates suggested that a 12AU7 could be substituted in place of the 12FQ7 in some instances. Is this true? IF so, what should I watch out for (current, voltage, pin out)?
Again, just curious.

The 'AU7 draws less heater current so you are OK there. The max. allowable B+ is higher for the 'FQ7; so, at the ragged edge, the B+ rail can be an issue. Mu is about the same, but the 'FQ7 has a slightly higher max. plate dissipation which could be an issue under certain operating conditions.Sonics are a can of worms I will not go near. You are probably safe electrically, especially if you use the rugged 6189/12AU7WA military version.

I'll be careful trying this idea of mine out. If it doesn't work, I'll just end up buying a new pre (hehehehe.... don't tell the wife).
BTW, please enlighten me as to your opinion on the 'FQ7 vs. 'AU7. What did you hear??
Dman
I didn't hear anything, as I've done no auditioning. Remember, the 'FQ7 is a 'SN7 in a Noval "costume". The 'SN7 is a "favored child".Listen for yourself and find out what works for your ears, in your rig, in your room.

Fair enough! Thanks for the hints again. I have a couple of Amperex's laying around (they were free!)that I am dying to at least try!
