A quick question which wasn't apparent from a search in the archivesI have the glass bottle versions of the 6SJ7WGT and the red and black metal cans RCA version (5693s). Which ones are better?
Grateful for any advice.
B2,Best to try both in your unit and find out for yourself. Personally, I really like the tone of the metal RCA 6SJ7. Warm tone. It seems to have a nice response to increasing volume. I use it in a couple SET amps.
But, you could hate it. That's okay. Tonal tastes are like a statistics curve. Not right or wrong---just a population centered about a midpoint.
I agree with Steve ... you can't say one is better than the other. You have to listen to them. Personal preference is such a subjective thing. What I can say, however, is that I have never tried any metal ones that did not sound great - that includes the JAN VT-116 versions. I particularly like the Tung-sol metal version with "distributed by Brimar" overprinted on them. Very clean, open tone with higher gain than most. They are possibly selected by Brimar for this. All I know is they consistently measure 10% higher in emission than all others I've tried. The RCA metal version is also very good and almost up to the Tung-sol. Among the glass ones, the solid plate Mullards with the plastic base and short screening ring (about 5/16" high thin lead ring on the outside of the glass, starting from the top of the plastic base) do sound very good. So do the mesh plate Radiotron version, made in France ... surprisingly good and better than the exact same Radiotron made in Holland. Go figure. These tubes have a brown plastic base with a shiny metal cover on the sides of the base. I find the slightly shorter Sylvania with black ribbed plates are a little dull by comparison. It starts to get really hard to pick holes in quality NOS tubes like these. They are all pretty darn close, but I still think the metal ones have an edge. The detail, imagery, spacial effects they offer are outstanding.
Thanks Frank S,Yes, it is very subjective but thanks for sharing your experience (which was exactly what I was after even though I didn't quite articulate that way)
Cheers
