The unit came with Telefunken. Get the new Ei Elites; they are an exact copy of smooth plate Telefunkens, are about $7.50 each and are by leaps (and of course bounds) the best current 12AX7. They are tested tubes from standard Ei stock, and have tighter tolerances on section balance and are low microphonics. The longplate rumor you heard is B.S. Chris
Chris:Any idea where one can get these Ei's, via mail order
Thanks
Mike?
I just picked up a quad from AES, and the price is fair. The Elites I received were not the nickle plate version, but the older grey plate type. For what it's worth, I run Tele smoothplates and popped in Ei ones one evening for some careful comparison, both Elite and nickle plate versions - all tested and screened. The gap between the Ei and the TFK is not that great in what I consider a very revealing system. The Ei is slightly (very slightly) less refined and and doesn't have quite the upper mid range presence that the TFK presents, but you really have to listen very hard to discern it. They otherwise run step for step. The tone and dynamics of the Ei are superb, and they better a surprising number of other NOS types in my tube box.
I would have no reservations about burning tested/screened Ei's against any NOS in the right system setup. At the price it's an absolute no brainer. Obviously, you can't presume the Ei will last as long as a TFK, but at the prices, it's a small quibble. And they MUST be screened and tested, as some vendors are reporting a 50% reject rate for noise or microphony. But the ones that pass are terrific.
