My gain setting is usually below the 12 o'clock mark. I have a solid state amp that dosen't need much gain. I bought some Tungsram's from Kevin and liked the way they sounded, but like I said they didn't last long. Maybe I got a couple of marginal tubes. I'm glad to hear about your success with your A.I. and hope it continues. I like the detail of the pre-amp but I find it a little dry compared to some of the other tube amps I have listened to. That is why I was hoping that some good NOS tubes would do the trick. By some of the responses that came up it dosen't sound to promising. Thanks for the heads up on your set up.Chewee.

HI again. The tubes Kevin sells are first rate and tested..I dont think you got marginal tubes from him. What makes you think they got bad so soon? what sound did your system do?I think tubes just fade away with age thats why i change mine every year. What amp are you using> How below the 12o'clock mark do you set it at? I have 2 different amps 1 tube a VAC 35/35 and a McCormack DNA 0.5 REV B..I usually set the gain at 12 but i could set it at 11 and the sound will be even smoother..Any ways look for a used VTL or Joule...
The tubes started to hiss and pop. I'm running a Proceed amp and Proac 2.5s with a ditial front end. The proceed is a little forword to start with, but like all Madrigal products it's has lots of detail. I went with a tube pre-amp to soften the sound up a litle. When I was auditioning pre-amps I tried the VTL 2.2 (I think that was the model) and the sound was way to bright with the Proceed. I did like the sound of the Cary SLP-98L. I ended up going with the L1 because I was able to pick up a demo at a good price. As far as the volume, I have a rather small audio room (17 X 13) with fair amount of sound control. It doesn't take a lot to fill the room with plenty of sound. The gain control is usually at about 10-12 oclock. 10 on jazz and 12 on blues and R&B. Thanks again for the info.Chewee.
Maybe there is a problem with the pre-amp itself. Like i said i've had my L1 for over 4 years and the only tubes that did not last were Amperex Bugle Boys.only about 3 months then THEY hissed and popped. Never had a problem since them tubes. Having good luck with the TungsramsI really like them ...And i like the L1 as well...
Thanks for the help and from one L1 owner to another, have a good one.Chewee.
