Has anyone used the Phillips SQ 6681? I understand these were made in the mid 60s by Siemens and had a triple mica. Are the any different then the Siemens ECC 803S? How do they sound? CBS made a 12AX7 type in the late 50s early 60s that used gold pins...any opinions?

No opinion on the 6681, but the Siemens ECC803S appears to be the same as the E83CC, they sound good, but a bit lean and bright. The premium CBS tube you refer to is the 7729. It is usually seem branded Raytheon or CBS. They have gold pins. The earliest version has a D-getter halo and appears to have been made by CBS (will also be branded Raytheon as they bought a lot of their tubes from CBS). This is simply a fabulous tube and IMO is unbeatable. There is a later O-getter halo 7730 branded Raytheon made by GE. A great tube, not quite up to the CBS version, but still great. But a warning - those who like the very analytical sound like the Telefunken, or Siemens, etc.. will not like the 7730. It is tonally very musical, but quite warm and soft.
Robert,7730 is a 12AU7 instead of a 12AX7. You can confirm this in any tube reference such as that on Duncan Amp.
The CBS 7729 have indeed the earlier square getter version and the circular getter version and the earlier version sound a bit better.
But IMHO these 7729 are really not in the same class of, said, the Mullard or Amperex long plate. But, of course, your mileage can be different.
