I've read that Audible Allusions preamps are very hard on tubes. Does anyone know if Melos preamps (SHA Gold Reference) are too? Also, does anyone have any first hand experience with replacing the Sovtek 6922 with better tubes in Melos preamps? Recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Follow Ups:
I owned a SHA GOld for a few years and my view is that the Sovtec are not that good. Basiclly ANY change will be for the better, also remember that there are lots of NOS tubes out there. The best I had was Tungrams (made in the 60s).BUT- my recommendation is never to buy a Melos now. The company has folded, service will be needed (they break) and will be hard to get.
Good sound though.
cheers

Right on Michael Y,Stay away from Melos at all costs. I know someone who got badly burned from the repair people that recently took them over.

Nikko,I never owned a Melos preamp, but have read many posts on boards scattered over the WWW and if they are on target, the Melos pre's are very well regarded with respect to both build quality and performance. These pre's apparently are more apt to yield long tube life and very praiseworthy results. However, you should be aware that many posts also were extremely negative regarding obtaining service from the Mfr. even before the Mfr. shut down abruptly.
Personally, I'd be delighted to take my chances with any of the Melos preamps in my system both for control and for headphone listening.
I can't comment on the tube substitution.
Good luck.
