I recently removed one of my old Fisher 500C receivers from storage. Aside from cleaning out the dust, is there anything I should check or adjust before I just plug it in and use it? I'll be using it with 15" Tannoy Reds in my basement rec room. Thanks

If you plug the 500c in and switch it on all kinds of bad things can happen. Bring the voltage up slowly on a variac.I've been through lots of 500 and 800 series Fishers and I guarantee you'll need lots of new caps and you'll have to replace the selenium rectifiers. You can get a pretty decent "rebuild kit" from Vacuum Tube Valley that is a little more expensive than buying individual parts, but alot easier.
Are you handy with a soldering iron? Can you read a schematic?
If not, I can reccomend some good techs that won't rip you off.
By the way, I used to drive my Monitor Golds with a 500c. Nice combo!
The best one-box tube unit in history! Great amp, excellent phono section and a superb tuner!
I can solder and read schematics so I might give this a go. Don't have a variac, though. I might also bring the unit to the Fisher Doc, who is only about an hour from where I live. Could you also give me those names of techs, please?Well, either way, I guess I really should take your advise and not just plug and play. I recently moved so it will be a while before I do anything.
Thanks again.

PS - how would you compare the sound of your Tannoys to your Cornwalls?
I'm not sure the Fisher Doc is taking in any new work at the moment. I sent him a Marantz Model 7 tube preamp for restoration over a year ago and I'm still waiting for the repairs to be completed. I've heard he has had some health problems and recently has added a new baby to his family, so that might explain the delay. I've heard from several people that he's one of the best. Good luck, - maldar
Why don't you get the Marantz 7 back and send it to Mike Zuccaro in San Diego, CA? Mike knows Marantz gear like nobody's business!!
And he's a nice guy and honest and fair and all that jazz . . .
Allan, thanks for the tip. Do you have a phone number or web address? -maldar
Here's Mike's number:(858) 305-5843
He did a Fisher preamp and a McIntosh tuner for a friend of mine
and did a good job.He also fixed a Philco Predicta TV for me, but that's another story.
He wrote the article about the Maratnz 10B tuner in VTV a couple of years ago and is really into Marantz gear. I think he uses a 7 as his "every day" preamp.
Thanks Allan, for all your help. I'm going to try to contact the Fisher Doc so I can find out what's going on with him. I'll keep Mike in mind in case the Doc can't get the repairs done in the near future. - maldar
