...6SN7GTs that is. I gotta say it's unbelievable how two little things could drastically change the sound of my BAT. Great tone, smooth presentation, just loving it.
I wanted to thank everybody who suggested those to me a while back.
Follow Ups:
Congrats, those smoke glass RCA's are great.
Have you compared them to other RCA's, like the 5692? I have some Sylvania VT-231's in my pre currently and have been searching around for some Ken Rad versions.
All the vintage 6SN7's are getting pricey unfortunately.
Thanks Rocket. I don't have much of 6SN7 vintage around for comparison, but I'm looking forward to it.
You're right, the prices are ungodly high for the NOS stuff, from $300 to $1000. I couldn't believe my eyes when trying to buy a pair of Ken-Rads. I have only one pair of Sylvania GTBs from '56 I believe, and to me they're not even close.
Going to monitor ebay until something comes up.

12V versions of most vintage tubes are still available at lower cost. And for only a few dollars, a small 12V SMPS can provide filament power. Just something to consider when you're searching for vintage 'SN7 or 'SL7, it opens up a whole world of available brands and variations to try.

Buy Chinese. Bury freedom.
The loctal versions of the 6SN7 and 6SL7, 7N7 and 7F7 respectively, can still be found cheap (compared to the 'N7 and 'L7) NOS and should also sound great. But you'd need an adapter, which would then make it a tall stack - not very pretty if your tubes are exposed, but no issues if hidden inside (w/out clearance issues) chassis or if you don't mind it.
In a perfect world, if a 6SN7 tube existed that blended the strong points of RCA grey glass and Sylvania VT231, I might actually buy equipment that used 6SN7's again..
That tube did exist. The National Union gray glass had those properties.
Sadly, that tube has passed into extinction and is now virtual unobtainium.
6SN7. However, it's still a bit away from near perfection. It would need the top-end air and speed of Sylvania metal base 6SN7...
Do you mean those?
Those are the black glass NU. Not a bad tube, but not the equal of the gray glass tube. The color of the coating on the glass is much closer to the color of your RCAs.The link is one I found with a quick Google. No association with this auction or seller.

.
That didn't come out right.
Anyway, I have big soft spot for that tube. So I know what you mean. Midrange is so seductive on that tube. A perfect match for small ensemble acoustic stuff. Female vocal and jazz are well served with that tube too.
Enjoy.
Hey, Sondek, thanks a lot, you were absolutely right about them, the mids are killing me in a good way! I played Kind of Blue yesterday, and it was a completely different experience, just stunning.
Going to play some complex music today, very curious about the performance.
