The 5965 is a 12AV7. They are nearly identical in electrical specs. The 5965 was designed for use in computers where the plates are switched off for significant periods of time.

Thanks for the clarification. Ive since confirmed that this scenario (replacing 12AX7 with Mullard E180CC / 5695) has been done and it works. But is experimental at best... Being new to tubes Im not inclined to "experiment" just yet...
Yeah, I wouldn't do that. 12AV7 has gain factor of only 37, vs 100 for 12ax7. If you want to get a bit more bass, try old stock Mullard or RCA Black plates.
