According to Fathauer's book, 'Electron Tube Locator' CV is short for common valve.
It is ironic that the "common valve" nomenclature is not used commonly. If it was we wouldn't have to question what a CV 492 is in the first place.
In the USA, the govt. nomenclature for common tube types was VT (vacuum tube) as in VT100 which is the 807. I still can't help thinking about the VT100 DEC terminal, though, every time I see VT100.
