My Conrad Johnson is really hard on tubes. However the Gold Lion 6922 is very capable dealing with the stress. Even more so than the EH6922 in my setup.
I am VERY happy with the GL in every way. So no complaints in the sound department. Just thinking ahead for a future present to myself.
Reading the below post kind of got me thinking again.
1- Can the 7308 be used in my preamp and take being driven hard like the EH and GL versions?
2- If so which one would be best?
3- Is there any sonic advantage using the 7308 over the 6922?
I remember having a few of those $$$ 7308 tubes and really liking them. But that was years ago and we all know how memories can fool you.
I am using a matched pair of Matsushita-National 7DJ8 tubes (made in Japan) in my Pathos Classic One MKIII. Very nice sound and good at all frequencies. I did not care for the Gold Lion 6922's, sounded a bit rolled off and bloated to me.
just got pair of National 7DJ8's (made in Japan) and these sound actually pretty good. no hiss or other problems. bass isn't most extended, but i have been using these less that 10 hours.
i have similar problem with Copland CTA-301 mkII pre amp, tubes don't last long and some tubes don't work at all. Bad kind cracking and flashing when turning on or awful hiss.
Today i tried new pair of Tesla PCC88's... not good. Hiss.
Last week new pair of EH6922's... noup, starts cracking and popping.
I have been using TAD 6922's that seem to last 4-6 months before going soft with sound. No problems at all, very silent, but sound is slightly dull, nice but yawn you know.
I guess i try Gold Lions next...
I don't have any answers.
I do have a question.
Is there any sonic advantage in running the 6922 that hard?
Maybe a mod to the circuit so the tubes are not being run so hard would allow you could use any 6dj8/6922 you wanted to?

"Still Working the Problem"
I think C-J engineered the 6922 pre generation on 6h23 ev tubes:
specs differ from euro and american e88cc ;i have tried
jj,tesla and mullard e88cc on my pr 17 ls:they last one month or two
then they loose bite on bass or treble .
On my opinion is better staying with well selected 6922 eh,sovtek
or 6h23 ev
airtime, based on my experience with 6DJ8 types I'll take a crack at answering.
1- Can the 7308 be used in my preamp and take being driven hard like the EH and GL versions? - *7308 can be use in any circuit designed for a 6922. I suspect, yes, it would take the beating in your preamp.
2- If so which one would be best? - *The obvious choices are Amperex & Siemens. There are others, but most of those are or were part of the Philips family and are similar, if not identical to Amperex. When I used them, I always preferred the Siemens. Siemens are a bit more extended at frequency extremes and have more sparkle and punch than the Amperex, but they sacrifice a bit of the mid-range performance of the Amperex 7308's, which is quite nice.
3- Is there any sonic advantage using the 7308 over the 6922? - *IMO, not really, it's completely subjective. YMMV. In my case, the Siemens sparkle and punch ultimately wore out its welcome with me. Eventually, sooner or later, I'd pull them and replace them with a Bugle Boy or a nice A-frame dimple-disc 6DJ8 for their mid-range an imaging virtues. I vacillated between the 7308 and the 6DJ8 in that pre for a couple of years. In the end, before passing on that Counterpoint SA3000, I happened onto a small cache of Tele 6922's and after that I never looked back. For me the Tele is the pinnacle for a 6DJ8 type. I still use them in my CAT SL1 along with JJs.
