I have been using metal body 6l6 with pin 1 of the octal socket open. According to the tube manual pin 1 should be connected to the shield. I have not found any other info about this connection and how to do it. Any help would be appreciated. cheers.
Pin 1 of metal envelope Octal tubes connects to the metal envelope. Connect pin 1 of the socket to chassis. The metal envelope is the shield!
BTW, quite a few glass envelope Octals that have a metal ring on the base (for instance KT88) connect the ring to pin 1. Unless, like the 6SN7, pin 1 of an Octal is explicitly connected to an active electrode, tying pin 1 of the socket to the chassis is (IMO) a very reasonable action.
Thanx Eli. That is what i believed, but, i wanted to be double check. In the case of the EL34 pin 1 is connected to pin 8 so connecting 1 to ground would require a switch or some other way around that, correct? cheers.
Let's look at the EL34 data sheet . Pin 1 is g3 (an active electrode) and normally connects to the cathode (pin 8). My previous remark about active electrodes applies. There is nothing to tie to the chassis in an EL34.
